A Tactical Tool to Manage Your Anxiety

I want to offer you a simple exercise I came up with to reset my energy & not let stress, anxiety, and fatigue pile up at the end of the day.

When I worked in the Federal Prison System I found that I was quite exhausted by the end of the day. I would go exercise and then basically crash and wait until my morning routine to reset myself. I had no energy by the time I came home. So I started trying out different things to reset my energy throughout the day so that it wouldn’t all accumulate and overwhelmed. I needed something that was quick and easy to use that I would be able to apply consistently. Eventually, I came up with S.A.R.A.

So now imagine you have experienced a stressful, upsetting, or anxiety-provoking emotion. Follow the steps of S.A.R.A. below…

Scan: Imagine an imaginary scanner from the top of your head moving down your body. As the scanner moves down your body simply notice where in your body you feel the emotions, pain, or sensations of being stuck.

Acknowledge: Give the feeling a name and acknowledge to yourself that you are experiencing this feeling. Touch the place you feel it with your hand. Just notice it. Feel what it feels like. Stay with it for a moment.

Release: Now is the time to release Feeling and Breathe The Energyand let go of the feeling. You may even gently tap on the area where you feel the feeling and breathe the energy of it out through your mouth. Tell yourself that you are releasing it and letting it go.

Affirm: The final step is to affirm what you would like instead of the situation that caused you stress. So, for example, if you felt like someone belittled you… you may affirm, “I am so thankful and grateful that my world is filled with kind and considerate people.” Or, if you feel anxiety about a business transaction you may say, “I am so thankful and grateful that all my business transactions flow smoothly and easily.” State your affirmation in the present tense, as if you have already received what you want. Often the affirmation is the exact opposite of what you were just experiencing.

I recommend practicing S.A.R.A. on a regular basis during your day- you will feel refreshed and restored each time you reset. You will feel calmer and clearer in facing your day and you will notice little miracles begin to happen! The more you use S.A.R.A., the more tuned in to your body you will be AND the better it will work.

Please let me know how it works for you! And, if you want more help in healing your anxiety please call me to set up an appointment.
